This is a colour photograph of Queen Elizabeth II. It shows her sitting and looking to the left. In this portrait, the Queen is wearing her Coronation Dress, her Coronation Robe, and the Imperial State Crown. In her right hand she is holding the sceptre, and in her left hand she has the orb. Princess Elizabeth became Queen when her father, King George VI, died on 6 February 1952. People started to plan the coronation soon after. They chose the date 2 June 1953. The ceremony was shown on television, so many people could watch the new Queen being crowned. The photographer, Cecil Beaton, prepared very carefully for this photo. He made many drawings during the coronation. He wanted to show the importance and beauty of this historic moment. In the photo, the background is a painting of the Lady Chapel in Westminster Abbey. The chair, curtain and carpet in the room help to connect the Queen with the scene behind her. The mix of studio lights and natural light creates a magical, almost divine glow around the Queen, as historian Peter Quennell said.
