Around the 4th century BCE, the Greek philosopher Aristotle identified three key rhetorical techniques aimed at both convincing and persuading the audience:
  • ethos: the speaker's credibility or trustworthiness
  • logos: logical reasoning and facts
  • pathos: appealing to the audience's emotions
