Culture note

There are several theories about how the British flag got the name "Union Jack". The most likely one is that when a small flag was flown at the front of a warship, it was called a "jack". Around 1674, the British flag officially became known as the Union Jack when flown on a warship at sea, while on land it was called the Union Flag. By the early 1800s, people started using Union Jack for the flag everywhere, not just at sea!
