Top facts about the Commonwealth

Top facts about the Commonwealth

1. How big is the Commonwealth?
The Commonwealth has 56 nations across six continents. It represents 2.7 billion people (about 30% of the global population with 60% under the age of 29).
2. Where does the Commonwealth come from?
In 2024, the Commonwealth celebrated its 75th anniversary. Emerging from the British Empire, the Commonwealth became a voluntary association of equal, independent nations in 1949 with the London Declaration, which allowed new republics to remain members. The symbolic Heads of the Commonwealth work hand in hand with the Commonwealth Secretary-Generals.
3. Who can join the Commonwealth?
Any country can join the Commonwealth as long as they share its values, even without any colonial ties. Membership can also be suspended if nations fail to uphold democratic principles.

Realm: a sovereign nation that recognises the British monarch as head of state.
Republic: a country with an elected or appointed president instead of the British monarch.
Monarchy: an independent nation with its own monarch.
Dominion: the term is now largely obsolete but was used to describe early Commonwealth members.
