A picture is worth a thousand words
Although its origins are not confirmed, it seems the first occurrence of a similar idiom dates from a 1911 newspaper article discussing journalism and publicity. It then appears in a 1913 advertisements for an auto supply store. Pictures are said to be messages in advertisments.
