Culture note

Released in 1939, Gone with the Wind is one of the most famous movies in Hollywood history. Adapted from Margaret Mitchell's bestselling novel, published in 1936, it quickly became a cultural phenomenon. In 2020, following criticism that the movie minimizes the reality of slavery, HBO Max temporarily removed the movie before restoring it with a contextual introduction.
