The scenario

Draft a cross-border community proposal.
You work for the Irish government's Shared Island Initiative. You've been asked to draft a written proposal for a new cross-border project aimed at young people, inspired by current initiatives. Make sure to show how it could benefit communities on both sides of the border. It's your turn to get creative and make a real difference! What project would you launch to bring young people together across the island?

Brexit and the Irish border

ang1-cs2-step1.mp3

The Brexit referendum reintroduced the possibility of a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic. Attitudes hardened as competing political aspirations for Northern Ireland's future returned to the forefront.[…]
But new polling from the Irish Times and the Arins project suggests these attitudes may now be changing. Across Ireland – north and south – there is a growing consensus that planning for a potential united Ireland is important, even among those who oppose it.
Perhaps most notably, even Unionists in Northern Ireland have reported a slight but meaningful move towards accepting a possible future reunification.
The latest polling shows that acceptance of potential Irish unity has risen from 21% in 2022 to 29% in 2025 among voters in Northern Ireland from a Protestant background. […]
For Unionists in Northern Ireland, who are often culturally Protestant, the border affirms their British identity, retaining their connection to the UK and entitlement to claim Britishness.
For Nationalists, most of whom are culturally Catholic, the border was a divide imposed illegitimately by the British. The border undermined their claim to Irishness. […]
Given its long and troubled past, planning will need to be careful and diligent to ensure Ireland remains at peace. But the recent polling suggests that, despite its many flaws, Brexit may actually have paved the way for a more constructive and less antagonistic conversation about Northern Ireland's future.

Towards a shared island?

ang1-cs2-step2.mp3

An all-island women's football competition is among the beneficiaries of a round of grants announced by Ireland's deputy premier. Tanaiste Micheal Martin announced grants worth a total of a million euro (£850,000) to 35 cross-border projects. They range from theatres to hospices, the environment, community development, local government associations, railway connections and the 2024 All-Island Cup, a women's football competition staged by the Football Association of Ireland and the Northern Ireland Football league. Mr Martin praised the projects as covering "a broad range of sectors and themes". […] "The Shared Island Civic Society Fund promotes practical co-operation and interaction in civic society on this island. This latest round of grants will promote North-South co-operation and enhance cross-border civic, economic, cultural and community links across the island."
Mr Martin said there has been "huge interest" in the fund after its launch last year.
"People and communities are reaching out to each other, identifying areas of common interest, and agreeing ways to work together to address joint concerns," he said. "This is the essence of the Shared Island Initiative. Communities working together for the betterment of the island for everyone who calls this place home.

Culture note

Ireland has a parliamentary democracy, known as an Oireachtas, made up of two houses: Dáil Éireann (the lower house) and Seanad Éireann (the upper house).

The Taoiseach is the Prime Minister, head of government and most powerful political figure in the country.

The Tánaiste is the Deputy Prime Minister, who supports the Taoiseach and may take the lead on national programmes, such as the Shared Island Initiative.

Micheál Martin served as Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) from December 2022 to January 2025, before serving as Taoiseach.
