Plantations were large estates that developed in the American South from the 17th to the 19th century. They produced crops such as tobacco /təˈbækоʊ/, cotton, rice, and sugar, which generated enormous profits for White landowners. This economic system depended on the forced labor of enslaved Africans and African Americans.
