Observe: They weren't talking, and they weren't eating. As if they were all suffering from a sleepless night. 

Réfléchis : À quel temps les autres auxiliaires sont-ils conjugués ? Identifie la terminaison du verbe qui suit. À la forme négative, not est : avant l'auxiliaire, attaché après l'auxiliaire ou détaché après l'auxiliaire ?

Conclus : Le prétérit BE + -ing évoque : des actions encore en cours, ou des actions réalisées à un certain moment dans le passé.
