The Norman legacy

Did you know?

Did you know?

1. How did the Normans aff ect the English landscape?  Did they opened French restaurants, did they built castles or did they built the Channel Tunnel?
2. What else did they change? Did they introduced French words to the English language, rode their horses on the wrong side of the street or did they drank wine instead of tea?

01The feudal system

02How did this system work?

The feudal system and the Domesday Book

BBC Bitesize
Historians suggested that it had a basic structure: King – owned all the land.

Barons – the king gave some land to the barons in return for money and men for the army.

Knights – the barons gave some of their land to the knights if they promised to fight when needed.

Peasants – the knights gave a few strips of land to the peasants and the peasants had to share their produce with them.

They were not allowed to leave and were not free men.[…] The feudal system was a way in which a king could rule a violent society […] The knights of the feudal system developed ideas of ‘chivalry’, from the French word ‘cheval’ meaning ‘horse’. These ideas have given us many of our beliefs about what is ‘good’ conduct – loyalty, courage and defending the weak.

Grammar

La forme négative du prétérit simple

Observe : However, peasants were not free. The king didn’t own all the land.

Réfléchis : Repère les marques de la négation et les auxiliaires. Didn’t est-il composé de did + not ou de did + are

Conclus : Lorsque l’on souhaite parler d’un événement ... à la forme ... , on utilise l’auxiliaire ... ou l’auxiliaire ... suivi de la négation ... .

Phonology

La prononciation du « k »

Répète : Nutty Knott was not in, Nutty Knott was out. Knotting knots in netting, Nutty Knott was out. But lots of knots, were in Nutty Knott’s knotty netting.
Listen: Knight, know, knee, knock, knit, key, kick, kind, kingdom.

Réfléchis : Écoute et élimine les « k » que l’on n’entend pas dans la liste ci-dessus.
